Female entrepreneurship in Qatar: Challenges and recommendations

This research project explored the literature and found that there are seven challenges that female entrepreneurs generally face. These include age, nationality, marital status, occupational status, financial resources, educational level, and gender. Most of these factors were explored in the West, so the conclusions drawn might not necessarily apply to Qatar. The culture, traditions, norms, values, infrastructure, and access to capital differ between Qatar and the West. Thus, a gap in the literature was identified, which, in turn, gave this thesis research project an opportunity to explore the seven factors in a way that aligns specifically with the cultural context of Qatar. In light of this, two studies were conducted, and a mixed-method design was followed. Specifically, Study 1 was quantitative in that it used numerical values to show how many participants faced challenges in entrepreneurship because of their age, nationality, marital status, occupational status, financial resources, educational level, and gender. After examining how many participants reported that they faced challenges in entrepreneurship because of these seven factors, Study 2 was conducted. Specifically, the study was qualitative in that it used the lived experience of the participants to further describe the challenges that females in Qatar experience in entrepreneurship. The results of the two studies show that females in Qatar do indeed face challenges in entrepreneurship because of their age, nationality, marital status, occupational status, financial resources, educational level, and gender. The authorities in Qatar can use the findings of this thesis research project and the recommendations provided to help boost the number of female entrepreneurs in Qatar for a more productive economy.
